The grief of waiting: When families do not know whether their loved ones are alive

Rasuwa, September 4, 2026 — For families waiting for news of relatives who disappeared in the devastating Bhote Koshi flood, every ringing phone, unfamiliar face and rescue update can bring a moment of hope—followed by another moment of fear.

In the days since the catastrophic flood swept through communities along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems, the disaster has left behind not only death and physical destruction but also a painful uncertainty for thousands of families.

Their loved ones are missing. Some were working at hydropower projects. Others were travelling, living or working in communities that were overwhelmed by the flood. For their families, the absence of a body does not always bring the certainty of death, but the absence of any information makes it difficult to believe that their loved ones will return.

As search and rescue operations continue, many families remain trapped between hope and despair.

The scale of the disaster has made that uncertainty even more agonising. By Thursday, authorities and international reports said more than 1,200 people had been confirmed dead in Nepal, while more than 5,000 others remained missing. The figures continue to change as bodies are recovered, survivors are located and authorities attempt to identify the dead.

But behind every number is a family waiting for an answer.

For some, the wait begins with repeated phone calls to a number that no longer connects. For others, it means travelling from hospital to hospital, searching through photographs, contacting rescue teams or scanning lists of missing and recovered people. Families have also turned to social media, government portals and personal networks in the hope that someone, somewhere, may have seen the person they are looking for.

The search can become a routine that is both exhausting and impossible to abandon.

A relative may call a missing person's phone dozens of times a day. A family member may refuse to leave a rescue site because leaving feels like giving up. Every new report of someone being found alive can revive hope, even as the passing days make the possibility of survival increasingly uncertain.
