Woman dies three days after alleged assault by brother-in-law in Gulmi

Gulmi, October 15, 2026 — A 41- or 42-year-old woman has died three days after allegedly being beaten by her brother-in-law in Kholakharka, Ward 2 of Malika Rural Municipality, Gulmi.

The deceased, Lila Khatri, sustained a head injury in the incident, according to Bhimkiran Bogati, Superintendent of Police at the District Police Office, Gulmi.

Police said the incident occurred on the evening of Asoj 25, when 46-year-old Bal Bahadur Khatri allegedly assaulted Lila after returning home under the influence of alcohol.

After receiving information about the incident at around 7:30 p.m. that day, a three-member police team led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Udaybhan Yadav from the Paudi Amarai Police Post reached the scene. Police took the seriously injured woman to Lumbini Medical College Prabhas in Palpa for treatment.

Following the incident, police took Bal Bahadur and his 76-year-old father, Bhakta Bahadur Khatri, into custody for questioning. After preliminary investigation indicated Bal Bahadur's involvement in the assault, his father was released, while Bal Bahadur was sent to the District Police Office, Gulmi, for further investigation.

Lila remained under treatment at Lumbini Medical College Prabhas. On the morning of Asoj 28, at around 11 a.m., her son, Hirabahadur Khatri, was taking her home from the hospital.

When her condition raised concerns on the way, she was taken to Gulmi Hospital in Tamghas for an examination. Doctors declared her dead that afternoon.

A police team led by Inspector Sudip Nepali from the District Police Office, Gulmi, was subsequently deployed to investigate the case further. After a post-mortem examination that evening, her son received the body.

Police said further investigation into the case is underway against Bal Bahadur Khatri on a charge related to an offence against life.
