A glacial lake outburst in Tibet may have been the main trigger behind Wednesday’s devastating flood in Rasuwa, with the suspected lake located about 26 kilometres north of the Nepal-China border, meteorologist Ujwal Upadhyay has estimated. Upadhyay said at least one of three glacial lakes in the Tibetan area could have suddenly released a large volume of water. However, he stressed that the exact cause of the disaster cannot be confirmed until satellite imagery and other geographic data are examined in greater detail.

The Nepal Tourism Board has identified 384 travellers, including 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali nationals, as missing following the flash flood in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa on Wednesday morning. The preliminary list was compiled using information received from 10 tourism and travel agencies. The Tourism Board, Tourist Police and other tourism stakeholders are working to verify the whereabouts and safety of those listed in coordination with travel agencies, guides, local authorities and security agencies.

At least seven people have been confirmed dead after a massive flash flood swept through the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa early Wednesday, causing widespread destruction to settlements and infrastructure along the river. At least 25 people had been rescued by Wednesday afternoon, according to the Nepali Army spokesperson. The Nepali Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police have been mobilised for search-and-rescue operations, with 14 helicopters deployed to assist the response.
