Middlesbrough, England, August 22, 2026 — Seven people, including two police officers, were killed in a head-on collision on the A66 in northeastern England following a police pursuit.
Cleveland Police said a Volkswagen Passat carrying five people was travelling in the wrong direction on the A66 near Middlesbrough when it collided head-on with a police vehicle.
All five occupants of the Volkswagen and the two police officers were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash was under way and that officers were working to formally identify all those who died.
The families of victims who have already been identified have been informed and are receiving specialist support, according to police.
