Seven killed, including two police officers, in head-on crash in northern England

Middlesbrough, England, August 22, 2026 — Seven people, including two police officers, were killed in a head-on collision on the A66 in northeastern England following a police pursuit.

Cleveland Police said a Volkswagen Passat carrying five people was travelling in the wrong direction on the A66 near Middlesbrough when it collided head-on with a police vehicle.

All five occupants of the Volkswagen and the two police officers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash was under way and that officers were working to formally identify all those who died.

The families of victims who have already been identified have been informed and are receiving specialist support, according to police.

Cleveland Police Chief Constable Victoria Fuller described the incident as tragic and said its impact would be felt across local communities and the wider policing community.

Local politician Anna Turley said Cleveland Police were investigating alongside the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which examines matters involving police conduct in England and Wales.

Turley urged people not to speculate while the investigation is continuing, saying it was important to respect the process at a deeply painful time for the victims' families and communities.

The crash comes amid concern over a series of dangerous wrong-way driving incidents. Two recent head-on collisions near Dublin, Ireland, included one crash that killed five people.

Ireland's police chief warned earlier in the week that some young drivers had been deliberately travelling the wrong way on motorways to gain attention and likes on social media.
