A preliminary assessment by Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology indicates that the massive flood that swept through Rasuwa was unlikely to have been triggered by rainfall within the district, raising the possibility of a glacial lake outburst or another sudden release of water on the Tibetan side. Meteorologist Sanjib Adhikari said Rasuwa had received only limited rainfall over the previous 24 hours. While some areas of neighbouring Sindhupalchok experienced heavy to very heavy rain, most parts of Rasuwa recorded light to moderate rainfall, with the Thambuchet station measuring about 7 millimetres.

A sudden and massive flood entered the Bhote Koshi River from the Tibetan side on Wednesday morning, causing extensive damage in northern Rasuwa and prompting authorities to place downstream areas along the Trishuli River on high alert. The flood entered the Bhote Koshi at around 9:00 am., with the surge subsequently moving downstream toward the Trishuli River and Nuwakot. Nepal’s Flood Forecasting Division urged residents and authorities in riverside areas downstream to remain on high alert up to Mugling.

Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal has called for Nepal’s relationship with the United States to move beyond traditional development assistance and place greater emphasis on investment, trade, technology and entrepreneurship as Nepal prepares to graduate from least-developed country status.
