Nepal flood death toll reaches 903, with 4,247 still missing

Kathmandu, August 31, 2026 — The death toll from the devastating floods that swept through the Bhote Koshi region has reached 903, while 4,247 people remain missing, according to the latest situation update issued by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) at 9:00 am, Monday.

The fatalities have been recorded across eight districts, with Chitwan reporting the highest number at 272. Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East) has recorded 207 deaths, followed by Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta West) with 151, Nuwakot with 95, Gorkha with 62, Dhading with 55, Tanahun with 37 and Rasuwa with 24.

A total of 267 people have sustained injuries in the disaster. Of them, 156 have already been discharged from hospitals, while six specialized surgical teams continue providing treatment to those requiring medical care.

Search and rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate 4,247 people reported missing. The missing include 1,558 residents of Nuwakot, 865 residents of Rasuwa and 933 workers associated with hydropower projects.

The list also includes 65 people from Makwanpur and 114 security and government personnel from agencies including the Nepali Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Customs, Immigration and Quarantine offices.

In addition, 592 foreign tourists, 127 Nepalis travelling with foreign tourists and three people in Langtang National Park remain unaccounted for.

A total of 20,811 security personnel are involved in the ongoing response. The force includes 8,722 personnel from the Nepali Army, 7,894 from Nepal Police and 4,203 from the Armed Police Force.

Authorities said 10,451 people have so far been rescued from the flood-affected areas.

Helicopter operations have played a major role in the evacuation effort. A total of 411 helicopter flights have transported 3,344 Nepali citizens and 252 foreign nationals to safety. Recent aerial evacuations included 15 hydropower workers, seven Chinese nationals and seven Indian nationals.
