Two Indian nationals killed after car plunges into Phewa Lake in Pokhara

Pokhara, September 4, 2026 — Two people died and two others were injured after an Indian-registered car plunged into Phewa Lake in Pokhara early Friday.

The accident occurred at around 4:50 a.m. at the Gairichaura turn in Pokhara Metropolitan City-18 when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle while travelling from Sedi towards Lakeside. The car fell about 20 metres from the road into the lake.

According to police, four people were travelling in the Indian-registered car at the time of the accident.

A 15-member Nepal Police team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Surya Bahadur Bogati from the Baidam Ward Police Office and a 13-member team from the Armed Police Force, Nepal, were deployed for the rescue operation.

Twenty-seven-year-old Anmol Kumar Yadav and 33-year-old Suraj Yadav, both residents of Raxaul in Bihar, India, were rescued alive and taken to Gandaki Medical College for treatment.

According to Kaski Police, both injured men were in moderate condition and were able to communicate.

At around 5:55 a.m., rescue teams recovered two more people from the water in an unconscious condition. They were taken to the Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences, Western Regional Hospital, where doctors pronounced both of them dead.

One of the deceased was identified through an Aadhaar card as 26-year-old Navdeep Kumar Yadav of Raxaul in East Champaran district, Bihar, India.

The identity of the other deceased, a man believed to be between 40 and 45 years old, has not yet been established, police said.

At around 6:20 a.m., the vehicle, bearing Indian registration number BR 05 DB 6759, was pulled out of Phewa Lake with the help of a crane.

Rescue teams clear Trishuli 3 ‘A’ tunnel entrance in search for flood victims

Search and rescue teams have cleared about three feet of the entrance to the cable duct tunnel at the Trishuli 3 ‘A’ Hydropower Project in Nuwakot, where people are feared to be trapped following the devastating Bhote Koshi River flood in Rasuwa. A 93-member team led by the Nepal Army is carrying out the operation with support from a Chinese rescue team and other technical personnel. The rescuers are using five excavators, compressors and breakers to clear the blocked tunnel entrance. The entrance is buried beneath collapsed iron structures, large boulders and debris extending about 40 meters in length and reaching around 20 meters in height.

China sends third batch of flood relief supplies and forensic experts to Nepal

The third batch of emergency relief supplies provided by China arrived in Kathmandu on Thursday aboard a Y-20A large transport aircraft operated by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force. Ten Chinese forensic experts also arrived on the same flight to assist Nepal in its disaster response and victim identification efforts. They are the fourth group of Chinese experts sent to Nepal following the recent floods. Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Zhang Maoming and Nepal’s Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Mahabir Pun attended the handover ceremony for the relief supplies and welcomed the incoming forensic team.

Nepal declares September 7 national mourning, September 8 public holiday for Gen Z Martyrs’ Day

The government has decided to observe September 7 as a national day of mourning for those who lost their lives in the devastating Rasuwa floods and declare September 8 a public holiday in memory of those who died in the Gen Z movement. The decisions were taken at a Cabinet meeting held on Thursday afternoon, according to Education and Sports Minister and government spokesperson Sasmit Pokharel. The national day of mourning for the Rasuwa flood victims will be observed on Monday, September 7, the 13th day after the disaster. On the day, the national flag will be flown at half-mast at government offices throughout Nepal as well as at Nepali embassies and diplomatic missions abroad.
