Makawanpur, August 19, 2026 — One schoolgirl has died and two others remain missing after four students returning home from school were swept away by the Basudev River in Hetauda Sub-Metropolitan City-19, Makawanpur, on Tuesday.
The four students were from Nirmal Secondary School in Bastipur. According to school principal Prabodh Bidari, they were crossing the Basudev River at Basudev while returning home along the route from their school when they were swept away by the river. Bidari informed police about the incident.
Police later recovered the body of 8-year-old Roshni, the daughter of Deep Syangtang of Bastipur. According to Madhav Prasad Kafle, deputy superintendent of police and spokesperson for the District Police Office, Makawanpur, her body was found caught in a tree approximately 600 metres downstream from the location where the students were swept away.
Another student, 13-year-old Seema Bholan, daughter of local resident Sitaram Bholan, was rescued safely.
However, 11-year-old Sumitra Bholan and 12-year-old Binita Bholan remain missing, police said.
