Bhote Koshi flood death toll reaches 177 as 50 victims remain unidentified

Nearly 400 pilgrims travelling to Tibet, China, for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra have gone out of contact in Rasuwagadhi after a flash flood swept through settlements and damaged roads and critical infrastructure along the Nepal-China border in Rasuwa. Bashu Kumar Adhikari, managing director of Kathmandu-based Touch Kailash Travels & Tours, said 390 pilgrims, including 93 Nepali nationals, were scheduled to cross the border on Wednesday.

More than 60 employees, including engineers working on the under-construction 20-megawatt Langtang Khola Hydropower Project in Syabrubesi, Rasuwa, have gone out of contact following the sudden flooding of the Bhote Koshi River. Bijay Mohan Bhattarai, managing director of the Langtang Hydropower Project and secretary of the Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN), has urged the government to immediately intensify search and rescue efforts for the missing workers.

The death toll from the devastating floods along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors has risen to 95, with dozens of people still missing after a massive flash flood swept through Rasuwa and neighbouring districts on Wednesday. According to a statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, 95 bodies have so far been recovered from flood-affected areas. Authorities have yet to complete the identification of all the deceased. The disaster has also left 85 security personnel missing, including 44 members of the Nepali Army, 28 from Nepal Police and 13 from the Armed Police Force.
