Kathmandu, September 8, 2026 — A woman was rescued after allegedly attempting to set herself on fire at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu on Tuesday evening during a candlelight vigil marking one year since the Gen Z movement.
The woman has been identified as 30-year-old Laxmi Devi Basnet, originally from Gorkha.
According to Kathmandu District Police Range Superintendent of Police Dan Bahadur Thapa, Basnet poured a flammable substance over herself and set herself on fire.
Police personnel and others present at the scene immediately rescued her and rushed her to the National Trauma Center for treatment.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
