Janakpur, September 20, 2026 — Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Amresh Kumar Singh has warned that failure to protect Nepal’s current constitution could push the country into civil war and put the rights and achievements secured by Madhesh at risk.
Speaking at a press conference in Janakpurdham on Sunday, Singh said that if the existing constitutional framework were to collapse, Nepal could face difficulty drafting another constitution for the next 10 years. He said such a situation could lead the country toward civil conflict and result in Madhesh losing the rights it has secured.
Singh accused the federal leadership of failing to give sufficient priority to Madhesh. He also claimed that efforts were being made to turn Madhesh and Koshi Province into a strategic “battleground” and urged against activities that could fuel conflict in the two regions.
He said issues including education, healthcare, irrigation and other development needs in Madhesh require greater attention. Singh said his planned foot march would allow him to meet people directly, hear their concerns and understand their expectations.
Singh has announced plans for a “Mechi-Mahakali” foot march during the Chhath festival. Reports differ on the precise starting point and timing of the journey, with accounts saying he plans to begin the march after observing Chhath rituals in Janakpurdham and then travel across the country.
