House to elect chair of special committee on Bhote Koshi-Trishuli disaster

Kathmandu, September 28, 2026 — The House of Representatives will elect the chairperson of the Parliamentary Special Committee on Climate Change Impacts on Mountains and the Bhote Koshi-Trishuli Disaster at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal announced the election during Monday’s House meeting.

The 15-member special committee was formed following the devastating flood originating in the Bhote Koshi River in Rasuwa on August 26, which caused deaths and extensive damage in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and surrounding areas.

The committee has been given a three-month tenure, with a provision to extend it if necessary. It is tasked with studying and monitoring the causes, impacts and damage caused by the Bhote Koshi-Trishuli disaster.

The committee will conduct science-based research into the disaster’s origin, sequence, immediate triggers and factors that amplified its risks. It will also examine the impacts of climate change on mountain regions and assess possible links between climate change and the disaster.

Its mandate further includes studying impacts on transboundary watersheds and downstream areas, as well as monitoring search, rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts.

The committee will also examine disaster risk reduction and early warning systems and submit recommendations based on its findings.
