High alert urged along Bhote Koshi and Trishuli despite river levels below warning threshold

Kathmandu, September 1, 2026 — Authorities have urged residents living along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers to remain on high alert despite current water levels in both rivers staying below the official warning threshold.

The warning was issued today by the Flood Forecasting Division under the Hydrology and Water Resources Research Center following the devastating flooding in the Bhote Koshi on August 26.

Officials said that although water levels in the two major rivers have fallen, the possibility of sudden changes in river conditions and localized surges remains a concern in several parts of the country.

According to the division’s latest flood forecast bulletin, water levels in smaller rivers and tributaries in central, eastern and western Nepal are expected to rise significantly.

Moderate flash-flood risk has been forecast for Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kavrepalanchok, Sindhupalchok, Dhading, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Taplejung, Sankhuwasabha, Solukhumbu, Khotang, Okhaldhunga, Gorkha, Lamjung and Dolpa.

The same level of flash-flood risk has been identified in parts of Rukum East, Rukum West, Jajarkot, Darchula, Baitadi, Dadeldhura, Doti, Kailali and Kanchanpur.

Nuwakot and Rasuwa remain the areas of greatest concern. Forecasters have warned of a high possibility of severe flash flooding in the two districts due to potentially rapid rises in smaller local waterways.

Authorities have advised people living in low-lying and flood-prone settlements near rivers and streams to remain vigilant and take necessary safety measures. Residents have also been urged to follow official weather and flood warnings and move to safer areas if conditions deteriorate.

Traffic through the Gaddachauki border crossing in Kanchanpur has been disrupted since Tuesday morning after rising water levels in the Mahakali River led to restrictions on four-wheeled vehicles crossing into India. According to the Area Police Office in Gaddachauki, four-wheeled vehicles traveling between Nepal and India have been stopped from crossing the Sharada Barrage, also known as the Banbasa Bridge, due to the increased river flow. Senior Deputy Inspector of Police Jiban Gurung, chief of the Area Police Office, Gaddachauki, said the Mahakali River was flowing at around 112,000 cusecs.

Shram Sanskriti Party holds central committee meeting without Kiranti faction

The central committee meeting of the Shram Sanskriti Party, led by Harka Sampang, is underway at Hotel Gorkha in Dharan, Sunsari. The meeting is the party’s first central committee gathering since its merger with the faction led by former minister Sudan Kiranti four months ago. Three arrested in Kirtipur over alleged harassment of women on the road

Police have arrested three men in Kirtipur, Kathmandu, on allegations of harassing women walking along the road and using obscene language. Those arrested have been identified as 22-year-old Satyaraj Khatri of Kedarasyun Rural Municipality, Bajhang, who is currently residing in Kirtipur; 22-year-old Lalit Damai of Kanchanpur; and 21-year-old Ashok Bhandari of Krishnapur-3, Kanchanpur, who is also residing in Kirtipur. According to police, the incident occurred on the evening of Bhadra 12 in the Bhangal area of Kirtipur. The three allegedly followed women who were walking along the road, asked them for their phone numbers and directed obscene language at them.

93 Rasuwagadhi hydropower personnel remain missing after Bhote Koshi flood

Ninety-three personnel associated with the Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Station remain missing following the devastating flash flood in the Bhote Koshi River, according to engineer Tika Paudel. The missing include station head Santosh Adhikari, 51 staff members and 42 workers, Paudel said, describing the scale of the loss as devastating for the project and its employees. Paudel has also lost his wife, Kabita Neupane Paudel, who worked as a teacher at Nepal National Basic School in Timure. He said the disaster had taken away almost all of his colleagues as well as his wife.
