Kathmandu, September 2, 2026 — Biraj Singh Thapa has been appointed registrar of Kathmandu University by Prime Minister and Chancellor Balendra Shah on the recommendation of the university’s Vice-Chancellor.
Thapa took the oath of office and secrecy at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Education and Sports on Wednesday.
Thapa has served as an associate professor at Kathmandu University for the past 22 years. He holds a PhD in hydropower from Norway.
Speaking at the oath-taking ceremony, Minister of Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel urged Thapa to work proactively and collaboratively on university reforms. He also called for advancing the process of establishing Kathmandu University under a specialized trustee model.
Pokharel stressed the need for greater coordination and collaboration among universities to support reforms in Nepal’s higher education sector. He said Kathmandu University should preserve its distinct identity and play an important role in providing quality education to students who plan to pursue higher studies abroad after completing Grade 12.
