Assam, India, October 27, 2026 — Five people were killed and one injured in a shooting at a hotel in Guwahati on Monday night, with police suspecting that a dispute over the property's lease agreement triggered the incident.
The shooting occurred at Hotel Bilas Inn on GS Road, opposite Bora Service, at around 9 pm. The accused, Ghanakanta Gogoi, who had leased the hotel about a year ago, was arrested in the Paltan Bazar area within an hour of the incident, police said.
The victims included the hotel's co-owner, her son and daughter-in-law, her brother, and the property's caretaker. Guwahati Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta said four of the deceased belonged to the same family, while the fifth was from their village. The injured survivor was also from the same village.
“Preliminary investigation suggests that the incident stemmed from a property dispute related to the lease agreement of the hotel,” Mahanta told reporters outside the property.
Police said six people sustained gunshot wounds. Five died, while one survivor, identified as Satyen Pathak, 42, was taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital with a bullet injury to his shoulder. A senior doctor said his condition was stable.
Police seized a licensed .32-bore pistol from Gogoi, which investigators suspect was used in the shooting. Three of the deceased were identified as Helena Bharali, Deborshi Kashyap and Narayan Das. Authorities were verifying the identities of the other two victims.

The incident also drew a response from Assam Congress president and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi. In a social media post, he expressed condolences to the victims' families and raised concerns about public safety and the law and order situation in Guwahati.
Gaurav Gogoi, who is also the deputy leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, called on Chief Minister and Home Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take responsibility and give greater attention to crime. He also demanded a thorough inquiry, accountability and concrete steps to prevent similar incidents.
