Man arrested over alleged harassment of woman on Thamel street

Kathmandu, September 6, 2026 — A man has been taken into custody on allegations of sexually harassing a young woman on a street in Kathmandu's tourist hub of Thamel.

The Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office took the suspect into custody on Saturday and was preparing to hand him over to the Kathmandu District Police Range for further investigation and legal action.

Senior Superintendent of Police Dilip Ghimire, chief of the Kathmandu District Police Range, said further investigation and legal proceedings would be carried out against the suspect.

The incident came to public attention after the woman shared a video through an Instagram account named Moon's World, saying an unfamiliar man had touched her inappropriately while she was walking through Thamel several days earlier.

The video, which included CCTV footage, showed an argument between the woman and the man after the alleged incident. The man was seen denying wrongdoing during the confrontation.

According to the woman, she was walking home through Thamel when the man allegedly touched a sensitive part of her body. She said she immediately stopped him and protested, but he denied touching her.

The man was heard defending himself by claiming that he had been walking while moving his hands and had not intentionally touched her, according to the account shared by the woman.

The woman also said the man attempted to blame her during the argument, claiming that she had shown interest in him and made eye contact with him.

Several people in the area appeared to take notice of the confrontation, according to the CCTV footage. The woman later obtained additional footage from a hotel in Thamel, which she said contradicted the man's account of the incident.

The woman said she did not immediately report the matter to police because she felt unsafe and feared the possibility of retaliation.
