Trump congratulates Democrats after midterm defeat, acknowledges Iran war may have hurt Republicans

Washington, USA, November 4, 2026 — US President Donald Trump has congratulated Democrats on their victory in the midterm elections, acknowledging that the war with Iran may have contributed to the defeat of his Republican Party while rejecting personal responsibility for the outcome.

In a telephone interview with FOX News Democracy 26 on Tuesday, Trump praised the Democrats, saying they had performed well after seeking such a victory for 11 years. However, he denied that the result represented a setback for him personally.

Trump also said he accepted the election results and was willing to work with Democrats, who are set to control both chambers of Congress. He added that cooperation would be possible on several issues.

At the same time, he warned that he would use his presidential veto power against legislation he opposed, even if Democrats sent bills they considered important.

Trump acknowledged that the Iran conflict may have influenced voters. He told Fox that the war was partly responsible for the Republican defeat, although he maintained that voters understood the importance of his actions regarding Iran.

Despite previously urging Republicans to campaign as if he himself were on the ballot, Trump shifted responsibility away from his leadership. In a post on Truth Social, he argued that Republicans would have won by a landslide had he been a candidate.
