Kathmandu, September 7, 2026 — Nepal Police have arrested a 24-year-old man on allegations of posting a social media video expressing happiness over deaths caused by the Bhote Koshi flood and making remarks that could disrupt social harmony.
The Cyber Bureau arrested Birendra Madai, a resident of Surnaya Rural Municipality-7 in Baitadi who was living in Kathmandu, according to Superintendent of Police Dilip Kumar Giri.
Police took him into custody on September 5 and are investigating him under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2008. Authorities have obtained permission from the court to continue the investigation.
According to police, Madai posted a video on Facebook Reels following the devastating flood in the Bhote Koshi area. In the video, he allegedly expressed happiness over people being swept away by the flood and made remarks targeting different communities.
Police said the video was considered capable of disturbing social harmony. The Cyber Bureau subsequently launched an investigation and arrested him from Balambu in Chandragiri Municipality-12, Kathmandu.
