Kathmandu, August 14, 2026 — The non-establishment faction of the Nepali Congress kicked off a three-day national gathering in Kathmandu on Friday. Former Prime Minister and outgoing party president Sher Bahadur Deuba is attending the event as the chief guest.
The programme is taking place at Miracle Party Venue in Sukedhara and is being chaired by former party General Secretary and faction coordinator Shashank Koirala. Several senior leaders, including Purna Bahadur Khadka, Shekhar Koirala, Prakash Man Singh, Bimalendra Nidhi, Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Bijay Kumar Gachhadar, Prakash Sharan Mahat, Mahalaxmi Upadhyaya and Ambika Basnet, are present at the gathering.
Hundreds of party leaders and workers from different parts of the country have arrived for the event. Deuba returned to Kathmandu on Thursday after nearly five months outside the country.
Publicity Committee Coordinator Min Bahadur Bishwakarma said closed-door discussions are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. These sessions will cover political, organisational and financial issues, along with other current matters concerning the party.
The gathering is being held against the backdrop of an internal dispute that emerged after the special general convention conducted from January 11 to 14. That convention elected Gagan Kumar Thapa as party president. The faction that stayed away from the convention had questioned its validity at the Election Commission and later at the Supreme Court. Although the Supreme Court upheld the Election Commission’s decision, a full bench on August 6 permitted a review of the case.
