Kabardino-Balkaria, Russia, September 7, 2026 — At least 11 climbers were killed and six others remained missing after an avalanche struck a mountaineering group in Russia’s North Caucasus, local emergency authorities said.
The avalanche swept down Mount Mizhirgi in the Bezengi Gorge of Kabardino-Balkaria at around 5 p.m. local time on Sunday, hitting a group of 33 climbers.
As of Monday morning, 10 climbers had managed to descend the mountain on their own, while six injured climbers were taken to medical facilities. The fate of six others remained unknown, according to emergency services.
More than 50 rescuers and emergency personnel were involved in the search operation. Difficult mountainous terrain and the continuing risk of further avalanches were hampering efforts to reach the affected area.
Authorities said additional rescue personnel were being deployed, with helicopter support expected to join the operation if weather conditions improve.
