Manang, October 2, 2026 — The death toll from an avalanche at the Himlung Himal base camp in Manang has reached 15, while search teams continue efforts to locate one person who remains missing.
The avalanche struck the base camp in Narpa Bhumi Rural Municipality-5 on September 27, burying Nepali expedition support workers under snow. Search and rescue teams have since recovered 15 bodies, while Pasang Nuri Sherpa of Okhaldhunga remains unaccounted for.
Eight bodies were recovered on October 1, bringing the number of recovered bodies to 15. According to Manang Assistant Chief District Officer Krishna Prasad Paudel, two of the bodies were taken to the district headquarters in Chame and six were transported to Phu village. The bodies were recovered with the support of a Nepal Army helicopter.
Search and rescue operations are continuing for Sherpa. The Nepal National Mountain Guide Association has deployed a trained search and rescue team to the site, working in coordination with local authorities and expedition organisers.
Seven of the victims had been identified before the latest recovery operation. They were Chhebi Bhote and Pasang Bhote of Sankhuwasabha, Ghanashyam Rai and Suraj Rai of Khotang, Birendra Gurung and Aash Gurung of Gorkha, and Kalam Budha of Rukum.
