Girl goes missing after falling into Mahakali River while making video

Kanchanpur, September 7, 2026 — A 15-year-old girl has gone missing after slipping and falling into the Mahakali River while making a video in Dodhara-Chandani Municipality-10 of Kanchanpur on Monday.

The missing girl has been identified as Shristi Sunar.

According to Ward Chairperson Chandrabahadur Singh, Shristi had gone to the riverbank with her brother and other friends. The group had planned to make a video while standing on a wire structure installed along the river embankment to prevent floodwaters from entering nearby settlements and farmland.

However, she reportedly lost her balance while recording the video and fell directly into the river.

A video circulating on social media also captures her friends screaming for help after she fell into the river.

Search and rescue efforts have been complicated by the geographical conditions of the area. The incident occurred near the confluence of the Jogbuda and Mahakali rivers, where the water current is particularly strong.

Immediately after the incident, personnel from Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force, along with local residents, launched a search operation.

Police said the search operation was suspended for Monday after darkness fell and the strong water current made the operation difficult. The search is expected to resume on Tuesday morning.

The municipality has also sought coordination from India's Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) to assist with the search operation. An official letter has been sent to the Indian side requesting support.

According to Ward Chairperson Singh, the SSB has been requested to join the search from Tuesday morning with additional equipment to help make the operation more effective.
