Mamta Kafle Bhatt murder trial set to begin in October as court weighs evidence

Attorneys in the case against Naresh Bhatt, who is accused of killing his wife Mamta Kafle Bhatt, returned to court Thursday as the judge considered which evidence and witnesses will be permitted when the long-awaited murder trial begins in October. Bhatt, who has denied the allegations, was arrested on August 22, 2024, about three weeks after Mamta disappeared. He was initially charged with concealing a dead body and was later indicted on charges of first-degree murder and physically defiling a dead body. Mamta’s remains have never been found.

A 17-year-old Massachusetts boy has been charged with killing his mother and younger brother after prosecutors said he used the internet and ChatGPT to explore fictional “fantasy stories” involving the deaths of his family members. Arjun Aravind has been charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of his mother, Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and his 14-year-old brother, Siddharth Aravind, at their home in Massachusetts, USA. He has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail.

Magnitude 7.7 earthquake strikes off Flores, killing at least five

A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off Indonesia’s Flores Island early Saturday, killing at least five people, damaging buildings and prompting thousands of residents to evacuate to higher ground after authorities issued a tsunami warning. The earthquake struck at 5:58 am. local time, according to the US Geological Survey, while Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the quake at 4:58 am. Western Indonesia Time. BMKG placed the epicentre about 30 kilometres northeast of Mbay in Nagekeo Regency, at a depth of 15 kilometres.

Luigi Mangione pleads guilty to federal charges in Brian Thompson killing

Luigi Mangione admitted in federal court on Friday that he shot UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan and pleaded guilty to two federal stalking charges connected to the killing. Mangione, 28, told Manhattan federal court that he had planned the attack, traveled across state lines with the intention of killing Thompson and targeted him outside a Manhattan hotel on December 4, 2024. Eighteen people were injured, two of them seriously, after a passenger train derailed near Lewes in East Sussex on Thursday afternoon. The 14:24 Southern service from London Victoria to Eastbourne came off the tracks close to Lewes railway station shortly before 4 pm.
