Kathmandu, October 6, 2026 — Lalitpur Metropolitan City Mayor Chiribabu Maharjan has registered his candidacy for the post of central member of the Nepali Congress at the party’s 15th General Convention.
Maharjan registered his nomination under the open category at the National Assembly Hall in Kathmandu on Tuesday.
He was elected mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan City twice as a Nepali Congress candidate, in the 2017 and 2022 local elections. His work as mayor has received praise from various quarters, with supporters citing his performance as an example among Nepal’s 753 local governments.
Maharjan said he decided to contest for the central member position to contribute to the transformation of the Nepali Congress and strengthen the transformed party.
“The party needs to move forward by harnessing the energy of young people. This is both a need and a demand of the present,” he said.
