Gagan Thapa and Shekhar Koirala discuss Nepali Congress unity and flood situation

Kathmandu, September 6, 2026 — Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa and party leader Shekhar Koirala held a meeting in Kathmandu on Sunday, discussing internal issues within the party, efforts to strengthen unity and the latest situation in flood-affected districts.

The meeting focused on resolving recent misunderstandings within the Nepali Congress and finding ways to promote greater unity within the party.

During the discussion, Koirala said the country, democracy and nationalism were facing difficult circumstances and stressed that there was no alternative to a united Nepali Congress.

He also said he was prepared to make the necessary sacrifices from his side for the sake of party unity.

In response, Thapa expressed his support for strengthening unity within the party, according to sources familiar with the meeting.

The two leaders also reportedly discussed recent internal differences and possible ways of resolving them.

In addition to party matters, the meeting touched on the latest situation in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading following the devastating flood that struck Nepal's northern Himalayan region near the Nepal–China border on August 26.

The disaster caused extensive human and physical losses across the affected areas, with search, rescue, relief and recovery operations continuing.

The meeting between the two prominent Nepali Congress leaders comes as discussions over party unity and the party's future direction continue amid broader political and national challenges.
