A little-known Chinese animated film that initially struggled to attract even a small theatrical audience has become an unlikely box-office sensation after viewers began sharing clips online and mocking its crude animation. Niu Lai, also translated as The Cow Is Coming or The Ox Comes, was made by mother-and-son filmmakers Xin Yumeng and Sun Lifang over a period of about five years. The project was produced with almost no budget, little promotional support and no major marketing campaign. The film's theatrical run began quietly. During its first 10 days, it reportedly earned only around 7,700 yuan, with fewer than 300 tickets sold. Its fortunes changed when clips from the film began circulating across Chinese social media, where viewers drew attention to its unusually rough-looking animation and unconventional presentation.
