12 killed, at least 10 seriously injured in Polish bus crash in Hungary
Twelve people were killed and at least 10 others seriously injured after a Polish-registered tourist bus left the M3 motorway and overturned in a ditch near Mezőkeresztes in eastern Hungary early Sunday. The crash occurred at around 1 am on the eastbound side of the M3 motorway, about 140 kilometres east of Budapest, according to Hungarian authorities. The bus was carrying 57 passengers and two drivers, all travelling from Poland. The passengers were returning from a pilgrimage to the Catholic shrine at Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Magnitude 7.7 earthquake strikes off Flores, killing at least five
A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off Indonesia’s Flores Island early Saturday, killing at least five people, damaging buildings and prompting thousands of residents to evacuate to higher ground after authorities issued a tsunami warning. The earthquake struck at 5:58 am. local time, according to the US Geological Survey, while Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the quake at 4:58 am. Western Indonesia Time. BMKG placed the epicentre about 30 kilometres northeast of Mbay in Nagekeo Regency, at a depth of 15 kilometres.

Mamta Kafle Bhatt murder trial set to begin in October as court weighs evidence
Attorneys in the case against Naresh Bhatt, who is accused of killing his wife Mamta Kafle Bhatt, returned to court Thursday as the judge considered which evidence and witnesses will be permitted when the long-awaited murder trial begins in October. Bhatt, who has denied the allegations, was arrested on August 22, 2024, about three weeks after Mamta disappeared. He was initially charged with concealing a dead body and was later indicted on charges of first-degree murder and physically defiling a dead body. Mamta’s remains have never been found.

Arjun Aravind has been charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of his mother, Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and his 14-year-old brother, Siddharth Aravind, at their home in Massachusetts, USA. He has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail.

US President Donald Trump said Friday that he would “soon” declare the strategically important Strait of Hormuz a US territory after what he described as the defeat of Iran, escalating his rhetoric over the waterway at the centre of the ongoing US-Iran conflict. Trump made the remarks during a political rally at a police academy in New York state. He said the United States would first “finish defeating” Iran and then declare the Strait of Hormuz part of US territory. Trump chuckled after making the statement and added, “It’s true.”

Luigi Mangione pleads guilty to federal charges in Brian Thompson killing
Luigi Mangione admitted in federal court on Friday that he shot UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan and pleaded guilty to two federal stalking charges connected to the killing. Mangione, 28, told Manhattan federal court that he had planned the attack, traveled across state lines with the intention of killing Thompson and targeted him outside a Manhattan hotel on December 4, 2024. Thompson, 50, was shot as he arrived for UnitedHealth Group’s annual investor conference.
