Jhapa, August 21, 2026 — The death toll from Japanese encephalitis (JE) in Jhapa has risen to six following the death of a 64-year-old woman from Mechinagar Municipality-8.
According to Bishwanath Shrestha, a public health inspector at the District Health Office, Jhapa, the woman died last week. With her death, the district has recorded 11 Japanese encephalitis cases so far.
Of the six people who have died from the infection, four are women and two are men.
The District Health Office has expanded testing for Japanese encephalitis in different parts of Jhapa as health authorities continue to monitor the situation.
Shrestha said health worker teams have been deployed continuously across the district to monitor suspected cases and assess the situation.
