New York, USA, October 14, 2026 — Nepal has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2027–2029 term, receiving 173 of the 180 votes cast in the UN General Assembly, the highest vote tally in its electoral group.
Following the election, Nepal’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Lok Bahadur Thapa, thanked UN member states for their confidence in Nepal’s commitment to multilateralism, human rights, international law and a rules-based international order centred on the United Nations.
Thapa said Nepal looked forward to working with member states and other partners to protect human dignity, promote inclusion and social justice, and advance equitable development while ensuring that no one is left behind.
Based in Geneva, Switzerland, the 47-member Human Rights Council is the United Nations’ principal intergovernmental body responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide.
Council members serve three-year terms and are elected by the UN General Assembly through a secret ballot. Seats are distributed among five regional groups.
