Nepal Police chief calls for AI-enabled technology to modernise Kathmandu traffic management

Kathmandu, September 13, 2026 — Nepal Police Inspector General Dan Bahadur Karki has called for greater use of technology, including AI-enabled CCTV systems, to make traffic management in Kathmandu more scientific, systematic and efficient.

Speaking at the 34th anniversary celebration of the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Force on Sunday, Karki said the existing practice of traffic police standing between moving vehicles and directing traffic by hand should gradually be replaced by technology-driven systems that reduce risks to personnel and improve traffic flow.

Karki said the installation of AI-enabled CCTV cameras should be accompanied by better management of bus stops, bus parks, parking stations and the wider traffic system.

He also stressed the need for greater cooperation between Nepal Police and Kathmandu Metropolitan City to improve footpath and parking management and strengthen emergency response and rescue systems.

According to Karki, the capital’s growing population, rapid urbanisation and increasing vehicle pressure have created challenges not only in traffic management but also in the management of public spaces, waste, the environment, heritage conservation and disaster response.

He said cooperation between local governments and Nepal Police was therefore necessary to address these issues effectively.

Karki also pointed to challenges in waste management, saying problems exist throughout the process, from the point where waste is generated to its final disposal. He said effective long-term solutions should be developed to address these challenges.

He said Nepal Police was already working with local governments on the construction of physical infrastructure and security management. According to Karki, letters were being sent to all 753 local levels through the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation, and the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration to coordinate with Nepal Police on infrastructure and related security requirements.
