Taylor Swift makes VMA history as most-awarded artist

Los Angeles, USA, September 28, 2026 — Taylor Swift made MTV Video Music Awards history Sunday by becoming the most-awarded artist in the ceremony’s history after receiving the inaugural Artist Director Honors.

The 36-year-old singer entered the ceremony tied with Beyoncé at 30 VMA wins. The new honor, recognizing artists whose work behind the camera has advanced music-video storytelling, gave Swift her 31st award and sole possession of the record.

Swift also won Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia.” She dedicated the award to country music legend Dolly Parton, who died last month, and praised Parton’s songwriting and storytelling.

Swift used the ceremony to premiere the music video for her new single “Patient Zero,” which features actors Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson. The song tells the story of a woman warning another woman about a partner with whom Swift’s character had a toxic relationship.

The VMA milestone came only months after Swift married NFL player Travis Kelce.

Swift did not win Artist of the Year, with that award going to Madonna. Madonna entered the ceremony as the year’s most-nominated artist and finished the night with seven awards, including Best Collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter, Best Dance and Best Album.

Madonna, 68, also opened the ceremony with her first VMA performance in 23 years. She performed “Bring Your Love” with Carpenter before joining Charli XCX for “Danceteria.” Madonna and Carpenter later won Best Collaboration for their song.

Madonna also recalled her appearance at the first MTV Video Music Awards, describing how her manager told her after a performance mishap that her career was over. She said he was no longer her manager.

Nirvana received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, becoming the first group to receive the honor in more than two decades. Bassist Krist Novoselic accepted the award alongside surviving band members Dave Grohl and Pat Smear and reflected on the lasting appeal of the band’s music and visual work.
