Tanahun hydropower project provides pig farming training and piglets to affected families

Tanahun, September 20, 2026 — The 140-megawatt Tanahun Hydropower Project under construction in Rishing Rural Municipality-1, Tanahun, has provided commercial pig farming training and piglets to members of project-affected families to support income generation.

The training was conducted under the project’s Livelihood Restoration Plan with the objective of enhancing the income-generating capacity of affected families and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities.

According to Project Chief Shyamji Bhandari, 23 people from project-affected families in Byas Municipality, Bhimad Municipality, Myagde Rural Municipality and Rishing Rural Municipality were provided with training and pig farming support.

The training was conducted in coordination with the Veterinary Hospital and Livestock Services Office, Tanahun. Participants were trained in pigsty management, breed selection, feed management, disease prevention and treatment, production and marketing, among other areas.

Following the training, each participant was provided with one piglet. Bhandari said the support was intended to help participants apply the knowledge gained from the training in practice, either by starting commercial pig farming or expanding existing businesses.

He said the project has been implementing various programmes to create a long-term income base for affected families by connecting them with skills and production.

“Rather than simply providing assistance to affected families, it is important to teach them skills so that they can generate income themselves. Providing piglets along with training will allow participants to immediately apply the skills they have learned in practice,” Bhandari said.

The project said it has so far implemented 35 programmes prioritizing livelihood restoration and community development for project-affected families. A total of 701 members of affected families have benefited from those programmes.

The project has been conducting programmes to increase the economic self-reliance of affected families through skill development, expansion of income-generating opportunities, financial literacy and entrepreneurship promotion.
