Nepal Airlines revenue rises, but debt and costs keep recovery uncertain

Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) has recorded higher revenue in the last fiscal year, but preliminary figures show that the national flag carrier is still likely to post a deficit as debt, interest payments, maintenance costs and other operating expenses continue to weigh on its finances. Prime Minister Balendra Shah recently pointed to what he described as signs of recovery at Nepal Airlines. In a social media post, Shah said the carrier had generated Rs 6.27 billion in revenue in four months, achieved an 86 percent occupancy rate and repaid Rs 1.06 billion in loan instalments.

Silver imports overtake gold in Nepal as investors turn to the white metal

Silver imports overtake gold in Nepal as investors turn to the white metal

Silver has traditionally played a secondary role to gold in Nepal, where the yellow metal is deeply connected to Hindu and Buddhist traditions, centuries-old trade across the Himalayas and a long-standing culture of holding wealth in physical form. That pattern, however, appears to be changing as silver attracts an unprecedented level of investment interest. Nepal's silver import bill exceeded the value of gold imports in the last fiscal year for the first time on record, reflecting a sharp increase in demand for the precious metal. Customs data show that silver imports rose 366 percent to Rs 32.74 billion in fiscal year 2025-26, while imports by volume more than doubled to 104.29 tonnes. The figures were reported by Nepal's customs authorities and also cited in recent reporting on the surge.
