New South Wales, Australia, October 3, 2026 — Ten people, including three children, were injured after a car struck a crowd of Newcastle Knights supporters gathered in Newcastle on Saturday morning, according to police and emergency services.
The supporters had gathered along Newcastle Link Road in Wallsend to farewell the Newcastle Knights team bus ahead of the NRL grand final. Emergency services were called to the Transfield Drive roundabout at about 9:30 a.m.
Police said the 18-year-old driver was arrested at the scene. Authorities said the incident was not believed to be targeted and was not considered terrorism-related. The driver was undergoing mandatory drug and alcohol testing.
Two of the injured — a five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man — were in critical condition. The other eight, including a two-year-old girl and another five-year-old girl, were reported to be in stable condition.
Emergency services, including 15 ambulances and three helicopters, responded to the incident, while several injured people were taken to John Hunter Hospital.
