Trump pledges US assistance as 90 Americans remain missing in Nepal floods

Washington, USA, August 28, 2026 — US President Donald Trump has offered Nepal whatever assistance it needs following the devastating floods and landslides that have killed hundreds of people and left many others missing.

Speaking on Thursday, Trump said the United States had been in contact with Nepal’s leadership and that efforts were being intensified to locate American citizens believed to be in the disaster-affected areas.

“We've called Nepal, and we've offered them any help that they need. And we have a very good relationship with Nepal,” Trump said, describing the destruction as exceptionally severe.

Trump said dozens of Americans were in the affected areas and that authorities had not yet obtained a complete list of those affected.

The US State Department has said 90 American citizens are currently reported missing in Nepal following the floods. Former White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the safety of US citizens remained a priority for the administration.

“We have offered our assistance and support, but certainly the first priority for this president and Secretary Rubio will always be Americans,” Leavitt said.

The State Department is closely monitoring the disaster and has deployed a disaster response adviser to the region to support humanitarian and relief operations.

The US government has also announced $500,000 in emergency humanitarian assistance for flood-affected communities in Nepal. The funding, to be provided through Catholic Relief Services, will support emergency shelter, essential relief supplies, clean water and sanitation assistance.

The US Embassy in Kathmandu is coordinating with Nepali authorities to locate and assist American citizens in the affected areas. US citizens requiring urgent assistance have been urged to contact the embassy and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to help authorities maintain contact with them.

The devastating floods, which began in Rasuwa before affecting downstream areas, have caused extensive loss of life and damage to settlements, roads, bridges and other infrastructure across several districts.
