Information technology dominates Nepal’s foreign investment commitments

Kathmandu, Nepal, September 11, 2026 — Nepal’s information technology sector has emerged as the leading destination for foreign investment commitments, accounting for the majority of projects approved during the current fiscal year.

According to the Department of Industry, 1,116 projects were received in fiscal year 2082/83 BS, of which 727 are in the information technology sector.

Other sectors also attracted foreign investment commitments. The figures include 63 projects in manufacturing, four in energy, 18 in agriculture, 227 in tourism, 71 in services and two in infrastructure.

Investors have pledged a total of Rs 5.8 billion in foreign investment for the projects, according to the department.

The number of projects has also increased compared with the previous fiscal year. The department reported that 842 projects had received foreign investment commitments worth around Rs 6 billion in fiscal year 2081/82 BS.

Department of Industry Information Officer Suresh Dahal said investors select sectors according to their individual interests and business plans. He noted that investment requirements vary significantly among projects, with some requiring substantially larger amounts of capital, affecting the overall volume of foreign investment commitments.

The figures indicate that while information technology is attracting the largest number of foreign investment projects, sectors such as tourism, manufacturing and services continue to account for a significant share of investment interest in Nepal.
