Paris, France, October 18, 2026 — More than 1,000 people were arrested as demonstrations against education standards and the rising cost of living escalated into violent clashes, fires and looting across France on Saturday.
The French government estimated that around 550,000 people took to the streets during the demonstrations. While the main planned march in Paris was largely peaceful during the afternoon, confrontations later broke out between protesters and riot police, who used tear gas and water cannon to disperse crowds.
Buildings were set alight in several cities. In Lyon, a tourist office housed in a 19th-century building was destroyed by fire. Reports also described widespread vandalism targeting town halls and businesses, alongside looting in several locations.
The unrest prompted a strong response from the French government, which described the violence as an escalation. President Emmanuel Macron said those responsible for attacks, vandalism and looting would face prosecution.
The demonstrations reflect public discontent over education standards and the cost of living. Despite government efforts to address some concerns, including a promise to recruit 3,000 additional supply teachers earlier in October, protests have continued.
