
Walking is one of the simplest ways to remain physically active, and growing research suggests that people do not necessarily need to reach the often-cited 10,000-step target every day to gain meaningful health benefits. A 2025 systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis published in The Lancet Public Health examined 57 studies from 35 cohorts and found that health benefits were associated with progressively higher daily step counts, with the relationship beginning to level off for several outcomes at around 5,000 to 7,000 steps a day.
